Wylie Torrence McCarter

Mr. Wylie Torrence McCarter, 84, of Clover, South Carolina, died peacefully Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill, SC, surrounded by family and friends.

Born October 25, 1941, in Clover, SC, he was the youngest of five children born to the late Arthur Leo McCarter and Nancy “Nan” Ferguson McCarter. The Ferguson and McCarter families have deep roots in the Bethany area within York County, South Carolina, with the family homestead on Lloyd White Road having been passed down through generations from his grandfather, William Mack McCarter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Carroll McCarter, who passed away July 24, 2018, after a battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Wylie served in the South Carolina Army National Guard with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 263rd Armor, and was a member of the American Legion. A retired entrepreneur, he owned and operated a commercial painting contracting business, and he and Jean later ran a residential contracting and decorating business specializing in draperies, window coverings, and painting & wallcovering services.

A dedicated Mason for nearly 60 years, Wylie was a lifetime member of Alpine Lodge No. 208, A.F.M., in Clover, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and an active Shriner with Hejaz Shrine and the York County Crescent Shrine Club.

Wylie is remembered as a loyal and devoted friend, a loving father and grandfather, and a man who never backed down from a challenge. In his later years, his favorite pastimes included riding his tractor on the family land, spending his mornings with the “Romeo Club” at Hardee’s in Clover, and treasuring time with his daughter Marie, his grandson Wylie Glenn, and his extended family and neighbors on Lloyd White Road.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie McCarter-Frohna (Matt) of Lake Wylie, SC; and his grandson, Wylie Glenn McCarter of Winston-Salem, NC.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Doris McCarter Williams (Bill), Mary McCarter Brown (David), Mack Edward McCarter Sr. (Margie), and Andy Leo McCarter Jr. (Mary Jane).

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal funeral services.

The family will receive close friends and family for visitation at the home of his daughter Marie McCarter-Frohna, in Lake Wylie, SC on Sunday, March 22nd from 3-5 PM.

The family wishes to thank his care team at Atrium Health Charlotte Main Campus, Stroke Unit 9A, and the staff at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House for their compassionate care and support in his final weeks.
