Ruby Nell (McCarter) McCarter

Ruby Nell McCarter, 90, of York, SC passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Bratton Funeral Home, 1455 Filbert Hwy. York, SC 29745. The funeral service will be held at Tirzah Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, June 7, at 11:00 AM with Carrie Blanchard officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Ruby was born on August 1, 1931 in York County, SC. She was the daughter of the late Ross Jackson McCarter and Mattie Irene Davidson McCarter. Ruby is survived by her sister, Margie McCarter and brother, Marion McCarter (Margie). In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her sisters, Alma M. Strait, Betty Louise M. Jamieson, and brothers, Elvin Maxie McCarter and Paul Edward McCarter.

Ruby was the valedictorian of the York High School class of 1949. Following graduation, she worked as a store clerk at F.W. Woolworth’s until she began her career at the Rock Hill Telephone Company, later known as Comporium. After 32 years of service, she retired as the Office Manager of the Cherry Road branch.

In her free time, Ruby enjoyed gardening and cooking. As a skilled seamstress, she loved making clothes for the members of her family. McCarter women fondly recall wearing dresses with a “Made by Ruby” label sewn in the back.

The two things Ruby treasured most in life was the love of her family and her service to the church. With 76 nieces and nephews, and more than 80 years as a member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church, she leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and devotion. Ruby was proud to serve as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, a committed member of the choir, and a participant of the women’s evening circle for many years. Her love of children gave her the unique ability to make all those that she cared for feel as if they were her own. Her memory will especially be cherished in the hearts of her nieces, Emily and Ann Clayton, who like many of the family, spent their childhoods playing games and sharing stories with their beloved Aunt Ruby.
