Ross Dean Alford was born in York, SC, on March 26, 1982. He passed away on September 12, 2024, at the age of 42.
Ross graduated from York Comprehensive High School and Winthrop University. He was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Terry B. Alford. He is survived by his daughter Emmalyn Kay Alford, his father Lee S. Alford and his brother Matthew Lee Alford.
Ross worked in commercial display installation, home improvement and warehouse shipping and receiving.
He was very athletic and enjoyed participating in sports until he had serious injuries and surgeries to his shoulder and knee.
He was an all-star baseball player. He played quarterback and wide receiver for his junior high school football team, which won the conference championship. He played basketball in junior high school, little point guard for “biddy” basketball and other teams up through the senior boys’ team for Trinity as the center having grown to 6’3”.
He loved soccer and enjoyed playing goalkeeper. He played on a championship youth league team and varsity soccer for York Comprehensive High School and later was an assistant coach for goalkeepers. He also played goalkeeper for an adult league team in the Charlotte Soccer League.
He also loved golf and enjoyed a low handicap and was known for the incredible distance his drives achieved. He won multiple golf tournaments at Spring Lake Country Club.
Ross enjoyed youth activities at Trinity in MYF. “Miss Alice” was a wonderful youth director, and he enjoyed the MYF trips to West Virginia to go skiing.
He went on a “Teens Westward Bound” bus trip, which traveled throughout the western US, visiting many historic and scenic sites. He also took a boat trip through the Caribbean. He enjoyed SCUBA diving.
Ross was kind and helpful to others. As a teen and later as an adult went on Salkehatchie mission trips. The last time as a team leader replacing a bathroom floor and front porch for an elderly lady.
Most of all Ross loved his daughter with whom he watched children’s movies and played video games. They loved going to the arcade and riding on our golf cart with her little dog “Teddy.”
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 1, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist, followed by a family visitation and reception in the Trinity Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, PATH or a charity of one’s choice.
