Richard Jackson McCarter

Mr. Richard Jackson McCarter, age 79, of York, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Tirzah Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 180 Tirzah Road, York, SC 29745. All other services will be private.

Richard was born on November 26, 1946, in Rock Hill, SC. He was the son of the late Elvin Maxie McCarter and Martha Ann Turner McCarter and the loving husband of Joyce Scism McCarter. Richard retired as a Lieutenant with the City of York Police Department and was a lifelong farmer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who cherished the time he spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his children, Michael McCarter (Angie), Melanie McCarter Vogel (Troy), and Mark J. McCarter (Carla); his grandchildren, Will Vogel, Mandy McCarter, Jackson Vogel, Ashley McCarter, Kelley McCarter, Katelyn McCarter; and his great-grandson, Atticus Vogel. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Allred (Paul).

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnny McCarter and Jerry McCarter.

In memory of Richard McCarter, memorials may be made to the City of York Police Department Officers Fund, which is used for community services, attention Lt. Sean Bailey, 12 North Roosevelt Street, York, SC 29745.
