Mrs. Mary Alice Flood Heizman, age 87, of Commack, NY, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC.
Mary was born on August 8, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY. She was the daughter of the late John “Jack” Flood and Josephine Merker Flood. Before medically retiring, Mary worked as a pre-school teacher. She had a strong Catholic faith and cherished spending time with her large and loving family. Mary was a Trustee of her parish, Christ the King in Commack, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, and the leader of the Loaves and Fishes Ministry. She was a pioneer in the field of special needs catechetical ministry. Mary ran the innovative program for over 50 years and was given the Bishop McGann Award for her service to children with developmental disabilities. Mary was professed a Secular Franciscan on 10/10/10 and was a member of the New Pentecost Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Harry Stephen Heizman; her daughters, Mary Poole (Richard) and Denise Delio (James); her son, Harry James Heizman; and her grandchildren: Jennifer, Jason, Jael, Jared, Jaclin, Jessica, Justin, J. T., Josephine, Joel, Anthony, Nicholas, Rachel, Lindsey, Amanda, and Ryan. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren: Margot, Caroline, Oliver, Timothy, Charlie, Anslee, and Mason; her sisters, Kathleen DeSimone and Joyce Proetta; and her brother, Dennis Flood.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, James Flood and Jack Flood, and her sisters, Patricia Emmerich and Josephine Grossarth.
A funeral mass will be held at Divine Savior Parish in York, SC on Friday, October 17th at 9:30am.
There will be Visitation & a Memorial Service at the Commack Abby in Commack NY, on October 24th 2-4 and 7-9.
