Joseph Adkins, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Joseph “Joe” Alexander Adkins, Jr., age 93, of York, SC passed away on Friday, February 23rd, 2024 at his home.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM on Wednesday February 28, 2024 at Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 1184 N. Shiloh Rd. York, SC. The funeral service will immediately follow with Reverend Dr. John White and Chaplain Bob Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Joe was born on October 27, 1930 in York, SC. He was the son of the late Joseph Alexander Adkins, Sr. and Iva LaNora Wilson Adkins. He was a member of Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church and Elder Emeritus in York; SC. He retired from Hoechst Celanese as a mechanical engineer. He also was a veteran of the US Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS Vesole during the Korean War.

Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He instilled in his family the important things in life...honesty, integrity, hard work, and shared his love of the red country dirt. Family creekside walks were a Sunday afternoon tradition. Thanksgiving oyster roasts and decorating the "Charlie Brown tree" together were the highlight of every holiday season. Joe-boy shared homegrown vegetables and his knowledge of almost everything with family, friends, and neighbors. He always advised the ones he loved to " be aware of your surroundings". He taught his grandchildren about cars and trucks and tractors...how to change a flat and check the oil. Even though his hands were rough from hard work, his heart was tender. He was known as Mr. Fix It in the community and wore "many hats " in Beth Shiloh. He enjoyed keeping up with his USS Vesole mates and Tin Can Sailor buddies and wore his US Navy cap with pride. Joe was a true Southern gentleman that always put others before himself, especially Mrs. Helen. His service to others was a blessing to many.

Joe is survived by his wife Helen Robinson Adkins, his daughters Jackie Adkins Hicks (Dean) and Jane Adkins Schmitt (Jimbo). His grandchildren, Brad Hicks (Lauren), Garen Hicks (Megan), and Josie Schmitt. Also, his great grandchildren, Avery Hicks, Bryson Hicks, Adeline Hicks, and Whitlee Hicks.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings: Heyward Adkins and Mildred Adkins McCall.

In memory of Joe Adkins, memorials may be made to Beth Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 1184 N. Shiloh Rd. York, SC 29745 or to Agape Hospice, 1069 Bayshore Dr, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
