Mr. James Dean Neal, affectionately known as “Shotgun,” age 68, of Blacksburg, SC, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
A memorial service celebrating Shotgun’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Mt. Vernon Church in Hickory Grove, SC.
Shotgun was born on January 16, 1958, in York County, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Jimmy Neal and Shirley Ferguson Smith. He was a hardworking man who dedicated more than 40 years of his life to Catawba Nuclear Station, where he most recently worked as an electrician. His commitment to his work and the people he worked alongside was an important part of his life.
Outside of work, Shotgun was happiest when he was outdoors. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time in the woods. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and cheering on his beloved South Carolina Gamecocks.
Those who knew Shotgun will remember him for his great sense of humor and the way he could bring laughter to those around him. He had a personality that was uniquely his own, and his stories, laughter, and good-natured spirit will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Above all, Shotgun treasured the people he loved and the time he was able to spend with them.
Shotgun is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda Johnson Neal; his sons, Waylon Shane Neal and Jesse James Neal; his brothers, Gene Neal (Carolyn) and Mike Neal (Michele); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish his memory.
