Edward Massenburg Wood, Jr., 80, of Emporia, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026.
Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Bratton Funeral Home; 1455 Filbert Hwy., York, South Carolina 29745 with a service to follow at 2pm with Rev. Mia Levetan officiating. Interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Born on July 7, 1945, Ed lived a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and a deep love of learning. He attended the University of Virginia, graduated from Campbell University, and earned a master’s degree in business from Georgia State University, taking great pride in his education and the opportunities it provided. Ed started his career as a mathematics professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he inspired countless students. Like his teaching, He spent his life with patience, dedication, and quiet humor. He believed in the power of knowledge and in helping others, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of meeting him. Those who knew Edward will remember his kind and generous spirit, his trustworthiness, and the warmth he brought to every relationship. He had a passion for woodworking, finding joy and fulfillment in creating with his hands. Above all, he loved his family deeply and cherished every moment spent with them. He shared fifty-eight and a half wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carolyn.
Ed is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son, Edward, and daughter-in-law, Malinda; his grandchildren, Hunter Stewart, Christopher Alphin, Benjamin Wood, Blake Wood, Hannah Alphin; and his son-in-law, Stephen Alphin. He also held a special place in his heart for his sweet dog, Lucky, who brought him companionship and joy.
He was preceded in death by his sister Pattie Warren Wood Tillar and cherished daughter, Stacy Alphin.
Ed’s life was a testament to kindness, generosity, integrity, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
