Robert Dale “Nappy” Mitchell passed away on Thursday, May 9 at home after battling cancer. He was 65.
Dale was the son of Faye Wyatt Mitchell and the late Grady Mitchell. He was retired from the Postal Service after 30 years of service. Previous employment included Champion Labs and US Construction that included work on sites at the Savannah River Plant and beach restoration at Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island after Hurricane Hugo.
Dale also served in the Tri-Cities Jaycees. He held multiple offices in that organization locally and at the state level. He received the highest honor when he was recognized as an International Senator and was also awarded State Jaycee of the Year.
Very close to Dale’s heart was the upkeep and preservation of the Hopewell School House. He worked tirelessly for many years to maintain the building and property solely for the good of the community and was instrumental in keeping Hopewell Hash and gospel singing going for years.
Dale was loved by all who had the honor to call him friend and he was always there to lend a hand or tell a tall tale or just to stop by to check in. Truly, he will be missed.
Surviving included his mother, Faye Wyatt Mitchell, his sister, Patricia Dodds; his nephew, Will Dodds; his great nephew, Grady Dodds and great niece, Ellis Dodds. Also surviving are his cousin and caretaker, Bonnie Alexander, many aunts and uncles and over 112 first and second cousins.
The family will receive friends from 10-11am on Saturday, May 11th, 2024 at Beersheba Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will begin at 11am in the church sanctuary with Reverend Danny Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
