Brenda Hargett Weatherington, 70, of York, SC, entered the gates of heaven on Friday, March 6th surrounded by her loving family, after battling metastatic breast cancer for more than 13 years. Brenda was born at Charlotte Memorial Hospital on March 28, 1955, to the late Lester and Katrina Hargett of York. She is survived by her much-loved son, Todd Weatherington, of Little River, SC, (his partner Jess) her granddaughter Ella, her sisters Sharon H. Swanson of Hillsborough, NC, Susan H. Trinajstich (John) of Wake Forest, NC, brother Frank Hargett (Laurie) of York, SC and half-brother Glenn Hargett (Beth) of Charlotte, NC. In addition, she is survived by her dear friend, Charlie Weatherington, who loved her unconditionally and cared for her so tenderly. She had the love of many cousins, aunts and uncles, as well as her beautiful nieces and nephews who she cherished: Matthew Hargett (Katie), Lauren Swanson (Ron), Emily Hargett, Sally Swanson, Katherine Trinajstich Thomas (Eric) and Nick Trinajstich (Taylor). She has had a village for her care over the last several months including special caregivers: Bessie Smith, Nel Adams, Heather White, Stephanie Goins, Hope Parton, Ashlyn Barringer, Tammy Douglas, and Kathy Harris. Special thanks also to Riverview Hospice and nurse, Grace Carnes, social worker Lola Sutherland, chaplains Deb Stark and Chris Powell, as well as Dr. Jason Given.
Brenda was a graduate of York High School Class of 1973 and graduated from East Carolina with a BNA. A graduate of the master’s program in nursing at UNC-G, Brenda enjoyed a 37-year career in nursing and nursing education. She was an instructor at York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC and Piedmont Community College in Greenwood, SC. Her approach to teaching encouraged nursing students to view their patients wholistically as complicated individuals, rather than just a medical diagnosis.
She found joy in reading and studying her Bible, her work with the Healing Room of York, as well as the prison ministry with the York County Prison. Her passions included God, her family, her farm, flowers, birds, and the beach. She travelled with family over the last several years to California, the Caribbean, Myrtle Beach, SC, Emerald Isle, NC, and Michigan. She was a gifted photographer of family events and travel.
