Today, we remember a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and a dear friend whose presence brought warmth and happiness to the lives of so many.
Mr. James “Bill” Bratton Shelley, age 80, of York, SC passed away peacefully at his home and surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
Bill was born on October 17, 1945 in Chester, SC to the late Robert George Shelley and Bessie Hunter Shelley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Pate Shelley; his daughters, Beth Rabon (Billy) and Kathy Coleman (Daren), and his grandchildren, Jamie Coleman and Katelyn Coleman. He is also survived by his siblings: Bobbie Jean Bailey, Bonnie Brazzill, Robert “Doc” Shelley (Denna). Louise Dunn, William “Bo” Shelley, and Sharon Broome along with his brother in law, Dennis Allman. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Allman; brothers -in-law, Clarence Bailey, Ed Brazzill, and Carl Dunn.
Bill loved his family deeply and cherished the time he spent with them. His love was shown not only through his words, but through the countless ways he cared for, supported, and provided for those around him. Being a husband, father, and grandfather was one of the greatest joys of his life.
He also treasured his friendships. To know him was to know someone who valued a good conversation, a good laugh, and the simple pleasure of spending time with the people he cared about. He made memories with his friends that will be remembered and shared for years to come.
The outdoors was where he felt most at home. He loved fishing, hunting, and being surrounded by nature. Whether sitting quietly by the water, waiting patiently for the perfect catch, or heading into the woods, those moments gave him a sense of peace and happiness. These were more than hobbies—they were a part of who he was.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, family, and cherished memories. Though his chair may now be empty and his voice may no longer be heard, the love he gave and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
He was deeply loved, he will be greatly missed, and he will never be forgotten.
Rest peacefully, knowing you were loved beyond measure.
Services celebrating Bill’s life will be announced at a later date.
