Alice Wilkerson Obituary

Alice Neelands Wilkerson, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend was called to her heavenly home on June 22, 2024. She was 95 years old. Known for her unwavering work ethic and deep passion for country and bluegrass music, she leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and cherished memories.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, June 27th, 2024 at Bratton Funeral Home, 1455 Filbert Hwy., York, SC. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Steve Kirby officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC.

Born September 21, 1928, Alice grew up amongst her extended family in Smyrna, South Carolina, where she developed a steadfast determination that defined her life. She was a dedicated worker, retiring from Celanese textile mill with over 30 years of swinging shifts. Her work ethic not only provided for her family but also inspired those around her to strive for their best.

Among her many passions, country and bluegrass music held a special place in her heart. She could often be found humming tunes or attending concerts with friends and family, her face lighting up with joy as the music played. Her appreciation for this music was infectious, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Arthur Brown Neelands and Eunice Mae (Nichols) Neelands, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Minor Neelands and Gene Neelands, and her husband, Edward Wilkerson.

She is survived by two siblings, Harley Neelands and Lois Bouknight; her four children, Keith Monday (Kay), Teresa Gates, Ron Monday (Jenny), and Jeff Monday; 6 grandchildren, Kirk Monday (Hesta), Brandon Mangum (Nancy), Carla Alexander (Brian), Robbie Monday, Matt Gates, and Amanda Wright (Greg); 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

In lieu of flowers and in reflection of her love of music, the family requests donations to the South Carolina Bluegrass and Traditional Music Association (710 Meeting Street, West Columbia, SC, 29170), a local organization that provides scholarships to young people learning to play a bluegrass instrument.
